Iconic outfits on the big screen
What’s Han Solo without his sleeveless jacket and utility belt? What’s Rick Deckhard without his brown trench coat? And Indiana Jones without his trademark hat, whip and leather jacket? All of these iconic characters are nothing (but Harrison Ford) without their unique wardrobes that so clearly define them.
How would a person be able to differentiate between personnel in Star Trek without yellow, blue and red shirts? Clothes and uniforms are as important as the storyline, the acting and every other aspect that goes into creating an iconic story.
Hairstyles, wardrobe props and makeup have the potential to cement the credibility of a character, and make their look iconic. Actors like Daniel Day-Lewis, Javier Bardem, Samuel L. Jackson and Johnny Depp use their acting skills along with the wardrobe at hand to become each character they play with intensity.
Minimalistic movie posters depicting the defining prop of a movie demonstrate exactly how important clothing and hairstyles are for a movie role:
Without iconic clothing, there would be no Ghostbusters uniforms, no period-orientated outfits, like in Grease, Saturday Night and the Channel Four news team from Anchorman. Uniforms are the reason events like Comic Con exist.
Halloween costumes would be very limited without superheroes, famous characters and memorable outfits to imitate. Characters like Tyler Durden from Fight Club, John McClane in Die Hard, Marty McFly from Back to the Future, the Dude from The Big Lebowski and Raoul Duke in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, wouldn’t be considered as cool and memorable without the trademark red jacket, the dirty wifebeater, the red sleeveless jacket, the dressing gown and the yellow sunglasses.
If there's one thing to take away from iconic wardrobes, it's how important clothing is. Your wardrobe is how you express yourself to the world, so make sure it represents who you are. Embrace your style, and choose clothing that makes you feel like you. At Nic Harry we appreciate a diverse wardrobe, and we're all about individuality. Become the bold Sock Man, the colourful Pocket Square Man or anyone you want to be, and let your clothes tell your story.
